Polar Cap Productions is delighted to have award-winning documentary filmmaker Stavros Stavrides (pictured, right) as part of our team as Executive Producer.
Four years after graduating from the Ryerson University Motion Picture Studies program in Toronto, Montreal native Stavros Stavrides won the 1988 Genie Award for Best Documentary for his feature-length film God Rides a Harley.
Later that year he was nominated for a Gemini Award for Best Production of an Information Segment for the CBC Network Venture segment “Mandala”.
Today, Stavros is working on documentary programming for National Geographic Television, the Outdoor Life Network and the Discovery Channel.
For the Discovery Channel, Stavrides wrote and directed two episodes of the Daytime Emmy Award winning Adoption Stories (Great North Pictures) in Guatemala. He was also script consultant for Ultimate Response (Good Earth Productions) where he provided new narration to adapt the program to Discovery’s new programming action oriented format. In concept development, he wrote the series concept Ultimate Engineering (Barna Alper) in conjunction with programming heads at Discovery to successfully structure an international co-production among the various Discovery franchises worldwide.
His further series work includes writing and directing Mean Machines, Seasons 1 to 3 (Cream Productions/Discovery Canada/Discovery UK), Survivorman (Cream Productions/ Discovery International), Digging Up the Trenches (Cream Productions/History Television, Discovery Int’l), and writing and producing the inaugural season of Mantracker (Bonterra Productions/CTV Networks’ OLN), on which he wrote and developed the series concept. He also was creative consultant for OLN’s series Ed’s Up!, hosted by Barenaked Ladies’ Ed Robertson.
Hyper Hurricane was a one-hour episode for Earth Shocks and Naked Science which he wrote and directed for Discovery Canada and National Geographic International.
Currently, Stavros is Series Director and writer for Salvage: Code Red for Discovery Canada/National Geographic Channel International, following the inner workings of a team of tough salvagers racing to rescue grounded and upturned vessels around the world.
He wrote and directed over a dozen feature segments for the highly rated national CBC Network business magazine series Venture, covering personal profiles of business leaders in diverse industries. He wrote, directed and narrated the lead story in the one-hour CBC prime time special Racing the Rising Sun, a program focusing on trade in the Pacific Rim, on location in Hong Kong, Malaysia and Singapore.
One Man’s Price, a study of a convicted industrial thief, was awarded the Bronze Plaque in the Ethics Category of the Columbus Film Festival, and later a Certificate of Creative Excellence at the New York Industrial Film and Video Festival.
